Marmoreal or Terrazzo is Back Again in Interior Design

Marmoreal or Terrazzo is Back Again in Interior Design

Marmoreal is a new name of traditional Venetian terrazzo mosaics known from the 15th century when marble workers of ancient Venice used broken pieces of marble to produce marble slabs. It was a cheap solution to cover surfaces of  their living quarters with marble.  Terrazzo was very popular in the 50-70s of last century and now we see great renaissance of this concept as reinvention of this old style material. Even fashion in 2020 clearly show rebirth of midcentury colors, patterns and geometry. Small chips of marble or granite set in concrete and polished give very smooth finish and has a great look. This material originally was used as covering material for terraces, than gives its name Terrazzo,  but now already for few years it is back and taking over modern  bathrooms and kitchens and even is used to make camouflage furniture, covers large walls in public buildings. This new concept is known as marmoreal designed by London’s Max Lamb and produced by Dzek, and, just like old style terrazzo tiles, is made in Italy, at factory in Verona. Original terrazzo was made from earth-toned pieces of marble and mixed together looked a little bit boring with its monotonic shades, but now it is available in large collection of colors and mixes.

Marmoreal is not just a new name of terrazzo but it is came back with more ambitions, larger pieces of solid marble cut in irregular shapes and has lot of free space between chunks making more monumental sense with very high decorative value. Material is cut in very large pieces and covers whole space from ceilings to floor.

Marmoreal and Terrazzo was my inspiration to make soap with similar patterns from small pieces of soap what every soap makers has as technical leftovers from every soap batch they make. Handmade soap is too good just to trow away even if it is just a few small samples and we can't use them ourselves either, so found it as good idea to make some marmoreal or terrazzo soap.

Soap making is very sustainable business there is no waste, as you always can use every single piece of soap you ever is made.

Here is some of our latest Terrazzo soaps, mixed with fresh made soap and scented with small amount of natural essential oils. I found these little round remade soap bars quite attractive just like colorful river stones on Mediterranean beaches. But I am sure  will make more of them  soon again with marmoreal style large chunks.
